The Grey Area of Skittles…

Author: marta  //  Category: BundleMonster, OPI, Sally Hansen, SueSa

EDIT: sparked by a kind comment, I did some research on a true ‘skittles’ manicure and have come to the conclusion that this is more a double-accent-nail rather than a true skittles manicure.

From here on, as coined by Lindsey from Nails 4 Dummies the grey area between accent nail manicure and skittles manicure will be a SKITTLETTE manicure! ;)

As my 3.5 year old daughter, Maya, would say: today’s post is a “super-dest fast one” ;)

When it comes to a skittles manicure, it is important that though different, each nail somehow ‘adds’ to the overall look to create a cohesive unit.  Lately I have really been enjoying the skittles look, but I’m not too sure if this one is all that ‘cohesive’… but I will admit, I wore it for three days and quite enjoyed it… hmmm.

* * *

I used two coats of Sally Hansen Grey Area on three of my nails.  A deep purple/grey/brown shade (I may or may not have a backup bottles of this one ;) ).

The middle finger is two coats of OPI MBSW and Bundle Monster stamp BM-322.

The ring finger is two coats of Sue Sa S02 (only my favourite silver ever).

Now be honest, please.  What do you think of this skittles look?

Too much? Too busy? Or somehow still ok?

THANK YOU FOR READING!

      THANK YOU :D

Don’t like that the glitter is silver…a warmer tone would have been cooler (I imagine OPI Designer Da Better here instead) but other than that, everything else is awesome! I love that SH color, going to go buy a bottle next time I’m at CVS :)

    • http://www.chitchatnails.com/ Marta

You know, you may be very very right on that! I knew something was off and the purple-ish shade is definitely a warm one. Houndstooth (though chilly shades) remind me of warm winter months… so a light gold (as the OPI you suggested) would have worked better. Hindsight always has 20-20 vision… next time ;) Thank you!
I hope you do pick up the SH shade. I adore it to bits AND it wears really long on me also :D

  • Christine

I really like it. I think the murky color on your pinkie and index make this wearable.

Thank you! I really appreciate your honesty :D

oh my, I seem to have expressed myself not clearly – I <3 it and I admire your continuous creativity in coming up with new ideas for manis and your wonderful settings of your photos, you are very inspiring :-)

I love your skittles looks… Inspired me tons of times to try something like that too. Really like this combo, love the silver, and stamping , and that purple-ish colour is GORGOUS ! ♥

    • http://www.chitchatnails.com/ Marta

Thank you so much :D I am glad that some of my ideas were able to spark a look that YOU created. :D That is a major compliment.
The purplish-color I’ve owned for about two years now- I have two bottles and it continues to be a favourite of mine (wear really well also).

    • http://www.chitchatnails.com/ Marta

      Thank you SO much.
When Mei Mei from Mei Mei’s Signatures sent it to me I knew all other silvers would be forgotten. I ADORE this shade.
I provided a link for it right in the post (in case you’d like to order it). When I first reviewed it, it was supposed to be a discontinued shade. I checked and Mei Mei still had a few left (not too sure if they will be restocked).

skittles are one of my absolute favourite looks and girl you are ROCKING this! It looks fabulous and I think it is not too crazy at all. It looks very pulled together in my opinion. :) Keep the skittles coming!

  • Erica McCabe

Every time I see your designs, all I can think is .. “WOW!” I love this Marta :) Purple is my favourite colour and I love that you used a grey-purple colour. I love that you paired it with a solid silver glitter and houndstooth pattern in B&W. I agree with some of the comments, it looks really classy! Can I come visit so you can do my nails?

    • http://www.chitchatnails.com/ Marta

      Awh, thank you SO much.
I love purple shades also… but I don’t wear them all that often. This is a gorgeous grey/brown/purple … a favourite of mine for sure!
      Thank you!
If you are ever in London Ontario, I invite ;) no joke ;)

I LOVE skittle manis, its really cool that this one is all neutral colours. I think that because it is all neutral the “busyness” you’re concerned about doesn’t really affect the look. It turned out to be a really versatile and cool manicure!

    • http://www.chitchatnails.com/ Marta

Thank you! Do you own Sally Hansen “Grey Area”… it is my favourite for this time of year.
Thanks… I still see something a tiny bit off (like it is not matchy-matchy enough)… but it certainly didn’t bother me enough to remove it (wore it /enjoyed it) for three days ;)

I’m not a huge fan of the skittles look to begin with, but I genuinely like this one. I like it because they are just different enough that they stand out and the lack of cohesion is a plus in this case.

    • http://www.chitchatnails.com/ Marta

      Thank you so much Melissa.
I appreciate your comment a lot.
I know that people either love or hate skittles… glad this one you approve of :D

Lovely mani, it’s fun , I love how you mix and mash your colours and finishes and your stamping is awesome ;) xx

    • http://www.chitchatnails.com/ Marta

Thank you! I don’t know what has gotten into me, but lately the odd mix and match nails keep pushing to the foreground

  • http://www.facebook.com/morgane.rauscherborne Morgane Rauscher-Borne

This color looks sooooooooo nice ! :D And the glitter accent nail !! <3
And this houndstooth is really neat ! :)
This look is great ! ;)

    • http://www.chitchatnails.com/ Marta

:D Glad you like how it all came together :D

  • Brookee

I like your neutralish skittles mani.

Question…My understanding was that a skittles mani had to have 5 different nail colors. Am I wrong?

    • http://www.chitchatnails.com/ Marta

      Hi Brookee,
Your comment has given me some though… I may actually be using this term incorrectly… I thought skittles means more than one ‘odd’ nail, but this could also be a two accent manicure… You know, I will ask on twitter for some definitions and get back to you ;)

  • http://www.lovevarnish.com/ Deborah

Though they don’t look cohesive at first glance, I do love the look of all this together!

    • http://www.chitchatnails.com/ Marta

okay, I am glad you also agree… there is something ‘off’ but it still kinda works ;) Thank you!

  • http://www.chitchatnails.com/ Marta

Thank you! I’m glad you like this look.
The middle finger was created using a stamp from the Bundle Monster 300 series. :D (I am not good at freehand at all) ;)

  • http://moonchild666.blogspot.com/ Nuša Pavlič

For my taste, it’s never too much :D Also, you can never go wrong with the ‘pepita’ pattern (that’s how it’s called, right?!). It looks somehow odd when you look at only the four nails, but I can imagine that all five of them look just awesome together! :)

    • http://www.chitchatnails.com/ Marta

LOL, there is something both matching and “off” in this manicure. The thumb was the grey-purple shade… so in fact, this was a double accent nail manicure.

  • http://twitter.com/SwatchAndLearn Mary

Nice! The houndstooth adds the funk to this manicure. I never would’ve thought to pair all these together, but it really works. Well done!

    • http://www.chitchatnails.com/ Marta

:D Thank you! It sometimes helps to go “what do I want to wear”… think of a few idea and just wing it- throw them all in ;)
